Rubavu to Get a New Look Through Ornamental Tree Planting
The administration of Gisenyi Sector, in Rubavu District, has announced plans to enhance the city’s appearance by planting over two thousand ornamental trees, in an effort to expand green spaces and protect the environment.
The initiative will begin in September 2025 and will feature various ornamental species, including palm trees, Chifflera sp, Araucaria heterophylla, and Calistema sp. According to Gisenyi Sector Executive Secretary, Uwineza Francine, between 2,000 and 5,000 trees will be planted in different parts of the city, particularly in designated garden areas.
Uwineza explained that these tree species were chosen for their aesthetic value, their ability to provide shade, their deep roots that do not damage roads, and their low leaf-shedding rate, which helps keep the city clean.
The project will cover more than two hectares and will also reintroduce indigenous tree species known for restoring natural beauty and attracting beneficial birds and insects. Existing gardens will be upgraded and new flowers planted in public spaces.
Tree planting will first take place along Rubavu’s main roads, including the stretch from Kwa Rujende to Kwa Mujomba Station, past Umuganda Stadium, and up to the Petite Barrière border post. New gardens will also be established in the Makoro area and near Rubavu’s new bus terminal. Old and deteriorating trees along Lake Kivu’s shoreline will be replaced.
Preparations, including nursery setup and hole digging, are already underway, with the entire project expected to be completed by November 2025. The plan, which will cost over 8 million Rwandan francs (Frw 8,000,000), aims to improve cleanliness, protect the air quality, and beautify a city that continues to grow as a tourism hub.
