Kigali: Two men arrested in Rusororo with 31 Kilograms of Cannabis

The Rwanda National Police’s Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in Kigali has presented two men who were arrested in possession of 31 kilograms of cannabis, which they were transporting on a motorcycle. They were apprehended on August 9, 2025, in Bwiza Village, Kabuga II Cell, Rusororo Sector.

According to police, information from local residents led to the arrest of the suspects, who were known for distributing cannabis in different areas using motorcycles.

The suspects told authorities that the cannabis had been sourced from Kirehe District, having entered Rwanda from Tanzania. They were transporting it to Muhanga District for a client who had hired them to deliver it. One of the men, who owns the motorcycle, admitted that he often uses it for such activities and that this was not the first time he had been caught in similar offences. He revealed that he was to be paid Rwf 150,000, while his accomplice, who was carrying a single sack, was to earn Rwf 50,000.

Police stated that the seized cannabis showed clear evidence that it was destined for illegal distribution among the public. Their case files have been handed over to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), and investigations to identify other members of their network are underway.

The police urged those still engaging in drug trafficking to desist, warning that all their tricks are now well known, and stressed that they will not tolerate anyone endangering the lives of citizens by supplying them with narcotics.

In its message, the Police stated:

“We urge the public to continue reporting such crimes promptly so that they can be prevented before they occur, and to work together for the safety of us all.”

In Rwanda, cannabis is classified as a serious narcotic drug. Anyone convicted by a court of producing, cultivating, processing, transporting, storing, supplying, or selling it faces a life sentence and a fine ranging from Rwf 20 million to Rwf 30 million.
