Kicukiro: Police arrest seven suspects for theft and drug abuse

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) in Kicukiro District, Gatenga Sector, Nyanza Cell, Isonga Village, in collaboration with other security agencies and local residents, arrested seven men suspected of engaging in theft and drug abuse.

The suspects are accused of robbing passengers near Nyanza Bus Park, where they reportedly ambushed people boarding or alighting from buses and stole their belongings. They were also caught smoking cannabis in a nearby bush behind the bus park.

Residents had previously raised complaints about a gang that often-targeted commuters in that area, particularly along the footpath leading from the bus park to Juru Village, where several theft incidents had been reported.

A police-led operation, conducted jointly with local security organs, resulted in the arrest of three well-known thieves, as well as four others found smoking cannabis in the same area. According to police, some of the suspects also ambushed pedestrians passing through the bush to rob them of their possessions.

All seven suspects are currently detained at Gikondo Police Station as investigations continue.

Speaking about the arrests, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Wellars Gahonzire, the Police Spokesperson for the City of Kigali, commended residents who provided information that led to the operation’s success. He assured the public that security has been reinforced around Nyanza Bus Park to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We appreciate the collaboration from residents who reported these criminals. We have strengthened patrols and security operations in the area to ensure such acts are eradicated,” said CIP Gahonzire.

He also warned those involved in theft and drug-related activities to refrain from such behavior, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are fully committed to maintaining public safety.

“There is no place to hide for those engaging in criminal acts,” he added. “We urge citizens to continue reporting suspicious activities and individuals involved in theft or drug abuse so they can be brought to justice.”
